Get an Auto Wrecking Yard and Tire Storage License

Service overview

You need an Auto Wrecking Yard and Tire Storage License to operate an area where vehicles are wrecked or salvaged. The Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) issues this license.

Who

Business owners and their agents can apply for this license.

Requirements

Other licenses and registrations

You’ll also need drainage, lighting, and electrical approval. You must request these in person at the Permit and License Center.

Plans for fencing

The wrecking yard must have a fence. The fence must:

  • Be made of durable material.
  • Conceal wrecking activities and materials from street view.

If fencing would be impractical due to the geography of the area, L&I may approve terraced trees and shrubs in its place.

Ownership information

Your license will be issued to the legal entity listed on the Commercial Activity License and your Philadelphia Tax Account. Any trade name or “Doing Business As” (DBA) must also be listed on your Commercial Activity License.
