Some insects contribute to public health risks. The Department of Public Health addresses concerns about these insects.
Types of insects
Mosquitoes
We investigate and control mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases like West Nile virus. We investigate and treat stagnant pools and standing water, where mosquitoes often breed. We also help residents learn how to protect themselves and their homes from mosquitoes.
Other insects
We treat low-hanging wasp or hornet nests in curbside trees. We treat roaches in public sewers. We also provide information about other insect problems and identify insects for Philadelphia residents on request.
