The GIS Division (Geographic Information System) of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission (PCPC) originated in the early 1990's to take advantage of the emerging potential for efficiently maintaining map data, mapping tabular data, and analyzing spatial data. From being the only GIS division in the city back then, it today has become part of an Enterprise GIS that exists within the City of Philadelphia. The GIS division uses state of the art technology to create and maintain geographic data which is then used for map production both in paper and digital formats. The GIS division performs data analysis for the Planning Commission as well as services other city agencies, elected officials, civic organizations, and the general public.
