BUILDING PERMIT INFORMATION
This document covers building/mechanical permits only. It covers only the physical changes of a location, not including plumbing, electrical, and land usage (i.e. zoning). Other prerequisite approvals could be required depending on the nature of the job.
WHEN ARE PERMITS REQUIRED?
A Building Permit is required for:
- New construction*
- Repairs, alterations, demolition or additions* to a structure
- Installation of foundations for tanks and equipment.
- Construction or demolition of ducts, sprinkler systems or standpipe system.
- Changes in the occupancy classification* see Administrative Code Section A-701.1
- For exceptions to permit requirements see Administrative Code Section A-301.2.1(R).
* DENOTES THAT A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY IS REQUIRED
CAN I APPLY FOR A "FAST FORM" BUILDING PERMIT?
Certain types of permits can be issued over-the-counter without plans and without delays. These permits can be obtained online, at one of five local district offices as well as the Municipal Services Building Concourse. The types of "Fast Form" permits that are available are roof coverings, window replacement, interior demolition, relocation of sprinkler heads, relocation of HVAC diffusers, siding and stucco, warm air installations, and porch floor replacement. HOW DO I FILE FOR A BUILDING PERMIT?
Application forms are available in the Municipal Services Building Concourse or may be obtained through the mail by telephoning 215-686-1407.
WHAT FORMS MUST BE FILLED OUT AND WHAT INFORMATION MUST BE SUPPLIED?
Completion of the APPLICATION FOR BUILDING PERMIT is necessary for all work requiring a Building Permit or when a Certificate of Occupancy is required. Applications must be prepared in ink or typewritten and submitted to:

The following information must be shown on the application:
- Location of Property - Indicate house number(s) and street.
Descriptive locations such as "NEC or SWC of..." will not be accepted. This must be an exact address.
- Description of the proposed alteration or construction.
- The names, addresses and phone numbers of the owner, architect or engineer (if any), the name of the person filing the application, and the Business Privilege License Number for each (except owner).
- The signature of the applicant.
