On Tuesday, October 14, a few men attempted to gain access with crowbars and hammers to a residential property on the 1200 block of South 6th Street. The house is managed by a realty services company. An employee of the company was nearby, and confronted the men, who told him that they were inspectors for the Department of Licenses and Inspections. The men claimed that were reviewing the building for construction work under the Community Life Improvement Program (CLIP). When asked to show city identification, the men became angry and threatening. It was only when they learned that the building was to be sold that they desisted in their actions.
The men were driving two vehicles: a white van with "City of Philadelphia" painted on it; and a green Honda. They wore tee shirts with "Local 33" printed on them.
In light of these events, L&I Commissioner Ed McLaughlin is advising citizens to be aware of "bogus" inspectors.
Licenses and Inspections inspectors carry photo identification at all times, and are required to show it when asked. In addition, inspectors will not enter a property unless an owner or resident allows them access.
The Community Life Improvement Program is implemented in the 6th, 7th, and 10th Councilmatic Districts. The property on South 6th Street is located in the 1st Councilmatic District.
Residents should call 911 immediately if confronted by people who claim to be inspectors but will not show identification |
