In light of recent media reports regarding exposure to carbon monoxide fumes in residential dwellings, Licenses and Inspections Commissioner Ed McLaughlin advises citizens to take the following safety precautions:

  • Only hire a contractor licensed by the City of Philadelphia to install home furnaces and hot water heaters.
  • Insist that the contractor obtain the necessary permits required prior to doing any work, and insist on viewing them.
  • Maintain equipment by having it checked on an annual basis.

To see if an individual is properly licensed by the City of Philadelphia, call the License Issuance Unit at 686-2490. An automated message system will take the relevant information, and a call will be returned promptly.

Contractors may easily obtain permits at the Municipal Services Building, 1401 J.F.K. Blvd., Concourse Level. In addition, L&I's district offices also accepts applications. The addresses are as follow:

"Carbon monoxide is a silent killer," said Commissioner McLaughlin. "Each year, over two hundred people in the United States die from carbon monoxide produced by fuel burning appliances such as furnaces and water heaters."

"Protect your family and prevent tragedies by having your heating systems, including chimneys and flues, inspected each year by a licensed contractor. In addition, L&I recommends the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in hallways outside bedrooms. These inexpensive devices can be purchased at home centers and department stores."
