Naval Square

In the early 19th century, the Naval Home property, a National Historic Landmark, served as the first home of the U.S. Naval Academy and as the nation’s first retirement home for sailors and marines. The building was designed in 1826 by William Strickland. The original setting of the parade ground in front of Biddle Hall, and the flanking Governor’s and Surgeon General’s residences will be preserved.

Originally sold to Toll Bros. in 1982 the site sat vacant until fire brought the celebrated Strickland building and site to prominence again. Its potential as a residential site could not be realized until recently: it required the City's commitment through OHNP to bring all the agencies involved to the table to work out a plan, meet with the community and assure the developer that the market was there.

As a result of this joint effort, Toll Brothers is transforming this 20-acre site with its historic property into a community of distinctive residences ranging from luxurious townhomes to renovated condominiums with unique architectural details, and off street parking.

Biddle Hall has a private community center, club room, library and business center. There is a fitness center and jogging/walking trails within the Naval Square park.

The City of Philadelphia has been involved at every stage in the development of this site and the restoration of Biddle Hall.
