Maplewood Mall

Through collaboration between 8th District Councilwoman Cindy Bass, the City Planning Commission, the Department of Commerce, the Department Parks & Recreation, and the Streets Department, the City initiated a process for the reconstruction of Maplewood Mall in Germantown. The Mall has potential to become a vibrant, intimate space that showcases planning and placemaking and is an anchor for revitalizing Central Germantown.

Project Overview

The Department of Commerce is funding the design and construction of the project with $2.2 million in commercial corridor capital dollars. The Department of Parks & Recreation and Department of Public Property will manage the construction of the project. The project team will hire a consultant to combine public input with professional expertise to design a product that will break ground within two years. The consultants will examine the potential of reconfiguring the street and plaza layout, sustainable and maintainable design aspects, the provision of parking, and spaces conducive to outdoor events and activities.  Design and engineering commenced in 2014.
This transformation will not stop at the brick and mortar reconstruction of the Mall. The City will support the community in pushing forward additional activities such as Mall upkeep, facade and signage improvements, programming and events, public art, marketing, business attraction, and development.

Public Input

Public input will help establish a vision for the Mall in terms of its function, use, and design. As part of an open and transparent project, this website will disseminate information regarding public outreach, design, and construction processes. View the public outreach plan.

To date, the outreach team has conducted three outreach events geared toward the general public and three stakeholder meetings -- two with Mall businesses, residents, and property owners, and one with local community groups.

The first outreach event was held at the Re-Imagining Maplewood Mall Block Party on June 22, 2013. A summary of the event and outreach results can be found here.

A meeting with Maplewood Mall businesses, residents, and properties owners was held on July 29, 2013 at the Prince Hall Lodge on Maplewood Mall.  A similar meeting was held the following night with local Germantown community groups.

On February 20, 2014 a meeting was held with the Maplewood Mall Action Committee, who represents the interests of a group of residents, businesses, and property owners on the Mall.  They presented City representatives with a vision for the Mall.

Previous Plans

Over the past few years, there have been three planning efforts completed that have examined ways in which to improve the physical appearance of the Mall.  These plans will be reviewed by the City's design consultants to help guide their work.  They can be found in the links below:
