Mental Health Services
Office of Mental Health The Office of Mental Health provides adults and children who have a mental illness with needed medical, social and educational services. Most services are provided through contracts with a network of community agencies throughout Philadelphia.
Individuals may self-refer to the mental health/mental retardation base service unit (BSU) in their geographic area. Appointments are strongly recommended, but walk-in service is available. The BSU will make an assessment of the client's situation, determine the appropriate services and help the client access those services. Clients may also contact their BSU for information on a variety of support groups and counseling programs.
Mental health services are available to Philadelphia residents who receive Medical Assistance, have private fee-for-services health insurance or HealthPass, and the uninsured. Residents who belong to a managed care organization (HMO) should contact their primary care physician and/or company representative concerning the specifics of that organization's mental health programs.
Acute Services Division The Acute Service Unit provides suicide and crisis intervention through a hotline that operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The unit also provides a 24-hour, 7 day a week mental Health Delegate hotline to provide authorization for involuntary psychiatric commitments and serve as a mental health court liaison.
