OZONE ACTION /OZONE HEALTH WATCH DAY

The Ozone Action Partnership and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Air Management Services, has announced an Ozone Action/Ozone Health Watch Day.  Regional ground level ozone is expected to exceed the federal health-based air quality standard.  According to meteorologists, tomorrow's weather patterns are ideal for the formation of unhealthy levels of ozone in the lower atmosphere.

To help keep the region's air healthy, and minimize everyone's exposure to ozone, you and members of your family or friends susceptible to respiratory problems are encouraged to voluntarily limit or postpone certain ozone-producing activities.  The following are ways you can reduce ozone formation:

  • Limit daytime driving and combine errands
  • Ride public transportation or carpool to work
  • Walk or ride a bicycle for short, easy trips
  • Refuel your car in the evening - and don't "top off" your tank
  • Avoid prolonged idling and jackrabbit starts
  • If you must drive, try to avoid congested periods
  • Maintain your vehicle's emission control equipment
  • Postpone the use of gasoline-powered mowers until evening
  • Avoid lighting your barbecue with starter fluid
  • Use latex rather than oil-based paints
