Medical Examiner's Office

The histology unit is responsible for preparation of tissue slides for microscopic analysis. These slides can show evidence of disease not seen by the naked eye and can assist the pathologist in determining cause and manner of death. Some of the natural diseases and conditions found from analysis of tissue slides can "run in families," and the pathologist can then warn the decedent's family members to talk to their family doctor about being tested for the same conditions.

The histology unit does not accept interns.

Did you know…before DNA testing was available, the histology lab would prepare slides to confirm the presence of semen in swabs taken from sexual assault victims. Now, decades later, these slides can be used to extract DNA profiles from the semen present for comparison to the DNA profiles of known sexual offenders.
