The forensic investigation unit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. This unit is responsible for determining whether or not a death comes under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner and investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The investigative unit also identifies decedents and then notifies next of kin that their family member is deceased.

• Undergraduate students must plan their senior year internship in their junior year
• Typical majors include anthropology & criminal justice, but students in other majors may be accepted as well
• Graduate students, commonly from forensic medicine programs, must allow six months for scheduling internships
