2019 is in full swing, and so is the Office of the City Rep’s flag raising program! On February 27th, the Dominican Republic celebrated their third annual flag raising at City Hall. During their program, Dominicanos in the Delaware Valley honored exceptional members of the Dominican community who have been making incredible strides professionally and academically.

In January we started off the year’s flag raisings with South Korea. The office of Councilwoman Helen Gym put on a beautiful ceremony. To start the day, guests listened to the youth choir from the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Association for Korean Schools sing both the American and Korean Anthem. As the program got started, former CBS correspondent and current U Penn law student, Anita Oh, acted as emcee and shared her own story of growing up as a Korean-American in Connecticut. At the conclusion of the speaking program a quartet from the Philadelphia Orchestra volunteered its time to treat attendees to a short performance.

Philadelphia’s year of flag raisings is just getting started! There are still plenty of countries and communities to be celebrated. In April join the OCR in celebrating Greece (4/5), Sierra Leone (4/26), and Vietnam (4/30). May is Mexico (5/1) and Israel (5/6). June 1 is the Phillippines. July is Venezula (7/5), Morocco (7/15), and Colombia (7/19). August is Trinidad and Tobago (8/30).
