2011 THEME:  FREEDOM FROM FIRE – “WE CAN’T DO IT ALONE,

TAKE THE FIRE SAFETY PLEDGE AT HOME.”

The ongoing fire prevention and outreach programs conducted by the members of the Philadelphia Fire Department, throughout 2010 resulted in the installation of more than 14,000 smoke alarms and over 12,000 home visits.

In spite of these efforts, 33 citizens lost their life due to fire.  Therefore, the Philadelphia Fire Department will enhance its efforts to reduce the risk of its citizens dying in fires by targeting and educating them about the importance of personal responsibility while PARTNERED with the Philadelphia Fire Department and its mission to reduce to 0 the number of fire fatalities in the City of Philadelphia.  The Philadelphia Fire Department will encourage the Citizens of Philadelphia to take the HOME FIRE SAFETY PLEDGE.

The 2011 theme was selected as a result of fire fatalities (18%) that occurred in Philadelphia in which citizens attempted to fight a fire themselves, or going back into a burning dwelling once they were out.  These behaviors are easily corrected with additional community outreach and fire safety education.

Programs such as “Remembering When” and “Fire Safety Cube” in conjunction with the Fire Safety Checklist and Freedom from Fire Pamphlet have been successful in reaching the vulnerable segments of the population; senior citizens and children.  In 2011, these tools will continue to be the common thread of our fire prevention efforts.

Special attention will be given to providing citizens with the necessary information to empower them to take personal responsibility for themselves, their family, their neighbors, and their homes.
