Deputy Commissioner Craig Murphy joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in 1987. Now, as head of the Planning and Risk Reduction unit, Murphy oversees the Fire Marshal’s Office, Fire Code Unit, Fire Prevention Division, EMS-Community Risk Reduction and planning for special events like the 2017 NFL Draft, Made In America music festival and the city’s annual July 4th activities.
Chief Murphy’s portfolio includes the PFD’s Homeland Security/Special Operations Division, which includes the Hazardous Materials Administrative Unit, technical rescue and marine operations. He is a Task Force Leader on Pennsylvania Task Force One and also serves as an Urban Search and Rescue Specialist on the FEMA US&R “Blue” National Incident Support Team. He has deployed to numerous national disasters and various National Security Special Events.
Although he has served in both engine and ladder companies, his specialty has been in Urban Search & Rescue operations, having served for 17 years in both field and staff units (Rescue 1, Squad 47, Special Operations Command) at the technician, supervisor, manager and executive officer levels. He holds NFPA certifications as a rescue instructor/technician, swiftwater rescue instructor and fire service instructor. Chief Murphy assisted in PFD planning for both the 2015 World Meeting of Families (papal visit) and 2016 Democratic National Convention.
Craig is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. He and his wife Anissa live in South Philadelphia with their daughters, Aja and Sydney.
