PHILADELPHIA— Mayor Jim Kenney has issued the following statement on the results of last night’s elections.

“I am exceedingly proud of Philadelphia. Yesterday, we turned out at the polls more so than any time in recent history.  While the election’s outcome was not one that the majority of Philadelphians chose, our voice was still heard across the nation and the Commonwealth, and we now have the opportunity to be leaders in the healing of our country.

“It would be easy to look at the differences that divide our nation, and even our own Commonwealth, and simply give up. But that is not the American way, and it is certainly not the Philadelphia way. We gave birth to this country, and now we must all work tirelessly to give it new life and bridge the divides that have plagued us for decades. In Philadelphia, our diversity and our inclusion has always made us stronger, and we will continue to rely on that strength as we work to find unity.

“In that spirit, I wish to extend my congratulations to President-elect Trump and Senator Toomey on their victories. We look forward to working with you to find common ground, so that we may move Philadelphia forward.

“I also want to commend Congressman-elect Dwight Evans on his victory. It’s been my privilege to work with him many times over the years, and his leadership on everything from the recent SEPTA strike to the revitalization of Northwest Philadelphia, has instilled in me the upmost confidence that he will represent the people of Philadelphia well in Washington.

“Finally, my congratulations to Josh Shapiro, Joe Torsella, and Eugene DePasquale and to all Pennsylvania leaders who earned reelection last night. In what was undoubtedly one of the most challenging elections in our nation’s history, you earned the confidence of the people, and that is a distinct honor. Of course, the truly hard work still lies ahead, and I look forward to working with all of you to deliver for the people of Philadelphia.”
