Philadelphia- Mayor Jim Kenney, Managing Director Michael DiBerardinis, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell and Councilman Bobby Henon joined  community members at Vogt Recreation Center to announce the details for the 2017 Play Philly program. Play Philly infuses traditional city summer camp programming with active play and health programming at participating recreation centers.  Play Philly offer kids a healthier, happier summer camp experience by providing dedicated Play Philly coaches who lead effective and active play time and health programming, healthier food and beverage choices, free play-themed field trips; and free healthy giveaways.

“Childhood obesity is a serious issue in our city,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “It is important for all children to get the right balance of exercise, nutrition, and fun during their summer breaks to help them lead a healthy lifestyle.”

The Philly Play summer program will operate at 28 recreation centers from July through mid-August.  At each of the recreation sites, kids will participate in special active play programming that includes structured play time, skill building activities, and interactive nutritional education.

“We are thrilled to manage the Play Philly program,” said Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell. “It is a great opportunity to educate children about the importance of healthy eating and living through free fun, physical and safe activities every day.”

Play Philly programming will vary based on each facility’s specific needs, available space, resources, and demand, but the objectives are the same:  teach, inspire, and empower kids to be healthier and play more!

On August 9th, Play Philly is partnering with ABF Mud Run to host the 2017 Play Philly Summer Challenge. Children  from all 28 recreation centers will travel to the River Fields at the University of Pennsylvania to demonstrate the skills they learned over the summer by competing in various obstacles and events. The games will conclude with an outdoor dance party.

“Our partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation has continued into another summer in 28 Recreation centers. This summer, Play Philly will continue its commitment by offering 60 minutes of play-based physical activity to hundreds of kids across Philadelphia.” said Councilman Bobby Henon.
