The end of summer is upon us!

August saw events across Philly’s many neighborhoods, including National Night Out, “Operation College Help,” community schools celebrations, great news about the Army-Navy Game, and lots more.

Mayor Kenney joined the Athletic Directors from the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy to announce that Philadelphia is the site of the Army Navy Game for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022.

Mayor Kenney started up his monthly meetings with School District of Philadelphia principals for the second year
In anticipation of the 2017-2018 school year, Mayor Kenney resumed his monthly meetings with School District of Philadelphia principals on August 28. Since he’s been in office, the Mayor meets with local principals each month to hear their stories and concerns and keep dialogue open to develop solutions together.
As part of the Vision Zero Task Force, Mayor Kenney helped open the Chestnut Street Transportation Project, a project to help improve traffic safety.
Together with City officials from the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS), Mayor Kenney helped open the Chestnut Street Transportation Project, a project to help improve traffic safety for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists alike, on August 29. Part of the project includes the city’s first-ever one-way parking protected bike lane.
The Philadelphia Soul celebrated being the champions two years in a row with a rally at City Hall
For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Soul, Philly’s professional arena football team, earned their spot as league champsions. Like last year, Philadelphians celebrated the victory at a rally at City Hall on August 30.

Mayor Kenney spoke to the teachers on the importance of teaching Octavius V. Catto’s story to students during the O.V. Catto Memorial Fund kick-off event on August 31. The School District’s Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment designed a five-part professional development series for teachers aimed at helping them teach Philadelphia students the legacy of Octavius V.
