Warm temperatures gave way to a bit of snow this week, but the days are getting longer — and that ought to add a spring to most Philadelphians’ steps.

A lot can happen over the course of one week, so #PhillyMayorThisWeek recaps five moments you might’ve missed.

1. Mayor Kenney stood with City leaders in solidarity with transgender students, and Amber Hikes served her first day as Philadelphia’s new Director of LGBT Affairs.

In response to a recent decision by the Trump Administration to no longer interpret Title IX as protecting transgender students, Mayor Kenney joined leaders from Philadelphia’s transgender community and the City to voice his support for protections — and equality, respect, and dignity. Also this week, Amber Hikes reported for her first day as the City’s new Director of LGBT Affairs. You can learn more about Amber’s vision for equity, inclusion, and progress here.

2. The Mayor talked about the importance of protecting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and released the City’s ACA action guide.

Following a Republican proposal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the Mayor released a joint statement with Public Health Commissioner Dr. Tom Farley about the dangers the new plan would have on Americans locally and nationwide. Here in Philadelphia, over 200,000 people obtain coverage through the ACA, including 160,000 under the plan’s Medicaid expansion. To help inform residents, the City released its ACA action guide.

3. The City released its draft Vision Zero Action Plan, asking the public for feedback

In November 2016, Mayor Kenney created the Vision Zero Task Force in order to figure out ways to implement Vision Zero: the plan to reduce the number of car crash related deaths to zero by 2030. This week, Philadelphia’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) released its Vision Zero Action Plan. “I recognize that traffic crashes resulting in lives lost or severe injuries are preventable incidents,” the Mayor said. “It is our shared responsibility to build a transportation system that prioritizes safety on our streets. By focusing on system-wide improvements, we can stop traffic-related deaths. We can save lives.” Read the report online.

4. Mayor Kenney visited H.A. Brown Elementary and South Philadelphia High School, one of the City’s first community schools.

At South Philadelphia High School, a community school funded by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax, Mayor Kenney saw the school’s clothing closet, a program overseen by the school’s Community Schools Coordinator, Janelle. Students and families may take, or donate, gently used clothing; the program helps address a need for that neighborhood, which is one of the core components of the community school model. During his visit to H.A. Brown Elementary, Mayor Kenney visited its wildly successful breakfast program. In Philadelphia, the School District provides breakfast to all students; at H.A. Brown, three out of four students participate in the program. During his visit, the Mayor also enjoyed a chocolate muffin — and a young student noticed he did not use a napkin while he ate, so she provided one for him. He thanked her for the napkin.

5. Together with a delegation from Philadelphia, the Mayor flew to Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest (SXSW) interactive festival.

Joining representatives from the City’s Commerce Department as well as local innovators, entrepreneurs, and musicians, the Mayor traveled to Austin, Texas, for the SXSW interactive festival this weekend. While there, the Mayor has numerous events to help advance the Amplify Philly initiative, which promotes Philadelphia as a hub for innovation, highlighting the companies, music, and technologies created here. Throughout the conference, members of Philadelphia’s delegation will be updating social media using #AmplifyPhilly.
