Last week, at the Cecil B. Moore Free Library, Congressman John Lewis reminded us how important our right to vote is.

“The vote is precious,” Congressman Lewis said, “almost sacred.”

Lewis, one of the original “Freedom Riders,” started his public life as a civil right activist, and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery. During the march Congressman Lewis was beaten, suffering a skull fracture.

Though beaten and arrested, he would not be deterred — all for our right to vote.

Today, because of his and others’ sacrifice, our nation is closer today to its ideals than before. Congressman Lewis continues to raise his voice – so that others can raise theirs.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 8. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. — pick a time to vote.

Since I was 18, I haven’t missed an election. It’s something I take seriously.

I don’t think you need to look beyond Congressman John Lewis to see why.
