With school officially let out, the Free Library of Philadelphia kick-started its summer reading program with Read & Ring, an initiative encouraging kids to actively stay engaged with reading this summer.

“Summer reading is so important,” Mayor Kenney explained to children recently at the Free Library, “and I want to hear what you’re reading. Share your favorite books with me!”Read and Ring

Read & Ring encourages kids to call the Mayor at 267-689-READ to tell him all about the books they’ve read.

When kids leave their messages for the Mayor, they can talk about everything from a summary of the book to whether or not they enjoyed the stories they read.

Not only will the Mayor listen to these recordings, but he also plans to call back some of the kids, too!

The Free Library hopes to have 50,000 children participate, each reading at least six books during the summer months. Summer reading programs are great ways to encourage kids to stay sharp during their months away from school.

To get involved with summer reading programs, Philadelphians of all ages can sign up at any public library or at the Free Library of Philadelphia’s website.

To participate in Read & Ring, kids can call 267-689-READ (7323) to leave their message for the Mayor. Call today!
