Philadelphia – Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that construction activities will begin the week of January 30 for the Hamilton School -Vision Zero Safer Streets Around Schools project.  The project locations are:

  • South 57th Street from Locust St to Larchwood Ave,
  • Pine Street from South 56th St to South 57th St.

Traffic will be maintained during construction.  However, temporary lane closures are expected between the hours of 7AM and 5PM throughout the duration of the project to allow the contractor to safely perform the work.  These lane closures and work operations will be coordinated with the adjacent school to minimize any impacts to school operations.

The project involves the construction of ADA curb ramps, pedestrian curb bump outs, pedestrian countdown traffic signals, and upgraded LED street lighting.  Work will also include the installation of traffic calming devices along South 57th Street and Pine Street.

To complete the work, residents should expect some parking restrictions near the intersections and along the work area.  Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity. Vehicles must be removed from the work sites during the hours posted on the ‘No Parking’ signs to avoid being towed.  In the event a car is towed, residents should contact their local Police District to determine its location.

Construction work is expected to be completed by fall 2023.  The construction contract for this project was awarded to Carusone Construction, Inc. of Philadelphia.  The value of the contract is approximately $1.1M and is being funded predominantly by a Multimodal Transportation Fund grant.

The Streets Department thanks residents and motorists in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project.
