This week, family, friends and loved ones will gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving.  Soon after, glistening holiday lights line will Broad Street from North to South Philadelphia. Life-size presents with huge glittering bows are sure to grace store windows. The crisp sound of skates will cut through fresh ice on the rink in Dilworth Park. We are approaching the most wonderful time of the year!

However, for some Philadelphians, the threat of cold weather and scarce resources can mean rough days ahead.

The holiday season always provides a wonderful opportunity for Philadelphians to take time out of their busy schedules to help one another. Whether it’s serving those experiencing food insecurity a hot meal at Broad Street Ministries or other free meals sites, providing clothing, school supplies, or hygiene products for students at Community Schools, donating non-perishable food items to Philabundance, or reading to a child with Philly Reading Coaches – there is a way for each of us to give back.

The Mayor’s Volunteer Corps provides an amazing opportunity for Philadelphians to do just that during the holidays and beyond. The purpose of the corps is to connect volunteers to high-quality, impactful, and rewarding service opportunities that are aligned with the Mayor’s priorities, including:

  • Improving educational opportunities and outcomes for all of Philadelphia’s children.
  • Improving economic opportunities for all Philadelphians.
  • Operating government efficiently and effectively.
  • Improving public safety for all Philadelphians while treating residents with respect and dignity.
  • Developing a diverse workforce that looks like Philadelphia.

So, this holiday season as you gather with loved ones, remember that there are many ways to make a difference in someone else’s life.

No act of kindness is too small.

Have a wonderful holiday season.
