Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is partnering with Mural Arts Philadelphia for a new, dynamic art program.

This spring and summer, Murals on the Move is teaching pop-up classes to the after-school programs and summer camps at nine recreation centers and playgrounds. A special mural mobile will roadtrip throughout the city, with teaching artists in tow, to deliver the program.

In each session led by Mural Arts teaching artists, students will learn about public art and create their own artwork based on different themes. The artists will design exciting, hands-on art activities to engage and inspire students during each session that they can take home or display proudly at the center.

East Passyunk Community Recreation Center was one of the first centers chosen for the pilot program. Recreation Leader Trainee Natalie Felix DiDonato says she is always excited to bring community partnerships to the center.

“We’re together nine months out of the year, so it’s so nice to just break it up and have new energy come in for a little bit and do special projects with the kids,” Natalie said. “I think it’s great to introduce them to other programs in the city. Not all of them may know what Mural Arts is, so I think that’s first and foremost important, but also to support our projects going on here.”
