SW Germantown, oriented along the lower Germantown Avenue commercial corridor, is a neighborhood that is rich in
culture and history and has a number of churches, schools, and community organizations that make this community
vibrant. Although this neighborhood has many positive characteristics, it has some struggles- public safety,
blight, lack of youth engagement opportunities, and a number of vacant homes which are causing the community
to deteriorate. PhillyRising is excited to work alongside the 39th Police District, residents and other community
stakeholders to bring resources that can benefit the community while alleviating the issues that affect this neighborhood.
The Swampoodle/Allegheny West neighborhood is named after a partnership formed by Pep Boys, Tasty Baking Company, and local residents. Swampoodle is the former name given to a smaller area within this vicinity, which was the junction of three railroad lines between Lehigh Avenue and 22nd Streets. Though once a thriving community, Swampoodle has become an area plagued by urban ills: unemployment, poverty, abandonment, drugs, and crime. PhillyRising has been working with local residents and city agencies to meet the challenges facing Swampoodle.
