About the Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability is responsible for implementing Greenworks Philadelphia, the City’s comprehensive sustainability plan. The City and our partners have made great strides since launching Greenworks in 2009, including:

  • Tripling the City’s recycling rate.
  • Reducing city government greenhouse gas emissions by 15% below 1990 levels.
  • Greening more than 580 acres to manage stormwater and planting more than 120,000 new trees.
  • Increasing Philadelphians’ access to healthy, affordable food with more than 100 new farmers’ markets, gardens, and farms.
  • Adding 100 miles of bike lanes and launching the City’s bike share program.

In 2016, the Office of Sustainability will be updating the Greenworks plan to set new goals and targets for the next eight years and beyond. Please check back for updates on our work.
