PHILADELPHIA — As Philadelphia continues welcoming the world during FIFA World Cup 2026™, City departments are delivering a coordinated response that is supporting major events, maintaining essential City services, and generating increased activity in neighborhoods and commercial corridors across the city. More than a quarter million fans have visited Philadelphia’s FIFA Fan Festival™ since it opened. On Thursday alone, the City simultaneously supported a FIFA World Cup match attended by more than 68,000 fans at Philadelphia Stadium, thousands of visitors at the FIFA Fan Festival™ on Lemon Hill, and a capacity crowd of 5,000 at the Wawa Welcome America Celebration of Black Music Month concert featuring Philadelphia native Eve at the Dell Music Center.

As part of the day’s operational response, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker visited the City’s fully activated Emergency Operations Center (EOC), where she received operational briefings on one of Philadelphia’s busiest event days.

“The world is watching Philadelphia, and our public servants are showing exactly what this city is capable of,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “Every day, hundreds of City employees are working together to keep residents safe, keep our city moving, and make sure visitors experience the very best of Philadelphia.”

During her visit, Mayor Parker received operational briefings from Chief of Staff Tiffany W. Thurman, Managing Director Adam K. Thiel, Fire Commissioner Jeffrey W. Thompson, Deputy Managing Director Dominic Mireles, and emergency management leaders overseeing the City’s World Cup response. She thanked personnel representing more than 22 local, state, federal, and nonprofit partner agencies staffing the EOC.

“The collaboration across City government throughout this historic 2026 season has been exceptional,” said Managing Director Adam K. Thiel. “For years, under Mayor Parker’s leadership, departments have planned and prepared together so Philadelphia is welcoming, safe, clean, easy to navigate, and ready for the world. That teamwork is helping Philadelphia shine on the national and global stage.”

Over the past two years, the Office of Emergency Management has coordinated 80 training sessions for nearly 2,700 participants and 14 full-scale exercises in preparation for FIFA World Cup 2026™. On match days, the fully activated EOC brings together more than 50 personnel representing 22 local, state, federal, and nonprofit agencies to coordinate operations in real time.

The Department of Public Property’s approximately 20-person Special Events crew, led by Commissioner Joseph Brasky, has deployed more than 6,000 event barricades in recent weeks while supporting operations at the FIFA Fan Festival™, Philadelphia Stadium, and other major event locations. Earlier this spring, the department completed major landscape improvements throughout the City Hall quadplex, planting 84 new trees, more than 1,000 shrubs, several thousand perennials and ornamental grasses, and installing 25 decorative planters around City Hall.

The Streets Department has deployed 75 water barriers and 250 traffic cones around major event venues. The recently reopened Philadelphia Parking Authority Transportation Center handled 412 bus arrivals and departures during the Brazil-Haiti match weekend, with at least one carrier adding overnight service to meet demand. The terminal now serves an average of 4,500 passengers each day, with Sunday passenger volumes reaching approximately 7,000 travelers.

While Mayor Parker visited the Emergency Operations Center, City departments continued supporting major events across Philadelphia throughout the evening. At the Wawa Welcome America Celebration of Black Music Month concert at the Dell Music Center, Chief Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley joined City Representative and Director of Special Events Jazelle Jones as a capacity crowd of 5,000 celebrated Philadelphia native Eve. Under the leadership of Commissioner Susan Slawson, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation also welcomed more than 7,000 visitors to Philly Fair 250 last weekend, reflecting the wide range of major events taking place across Philadelphia this summer.

“One of Philadelphia’s greatest strengths is the people who bring our biggest moments to life,” said Mayor Parker. “For more than 20 years, City Representative and Director of Special Events Jazelle Jones and her team have helped deliver the celebrations that bring our neighborhoods together and welcome visitors from around the world. Throughout this historic summer, that experience, professionalism, and leadership have been essential to helping Philadelphia welcome the world.”

The City’s coordinated response is also delivering results in neighborhoods across Philadelphia.

Market East: Reading Terminal Market welcomed more than 30,000 customers on June 19, setting a five-year record for Friday visitation. “We’re enjoying a banner summer welcoming visitors from around the world,” said Annie Allman, CEO and General Manager of Reading Terminal Market.

South Street: Brauhaus Schmitz reported business is up 300 percent year over year, with three of the busiest non-festival days in the restaurant’s 17-year history. “Business is up 300 percent year over year. It’s really been a special tournament,” said owner Doug Hager.

Fairmount: The Bishop’s Collar continues seeing strong business from World Cup visitors. “We’ve welcomed fans from around the world, and business has been fantastic,” said owner Jeff Keel.

Fishtown: Mamajuana Cafe Philly has reported three consecutive weeks of year-over-year sales growth, avoiding its typical slowdown between Memorial Day and Independence Day. “Hosting the World Cup has been an incredible opportunity for our business. Business has increased for three straight weeks, and we’re welcoming so many new faces through our doors,” said co-owner David Heredia.

Philadelphia’s coordinated response will continue through July as City departments and partners support additional FIFA World Cup matches, the FIFA Fan Festival™, Wawa Welcome America events, Independence Day celebrations, the MLB All-Star Game, and essential City services.
