Philly’s public pools are for everyone! That is the message for those attending Parks & Rec’s second annual LGBTQIA+ Pool Party on Saturday, August 5, 2023. The pool party takes place at O’Connor Pool in Center City’s Filter Square neighborhood. O’Connor Pool is located at 2601-13 South St.

The event is the brainchild of Recreation Leader Chloe Harris. Harris launched the program in 2022. She’s proud to see Parks & Rec expanding its reach to offer programs for all residents.

“Welcoming new communities to Philadelphia’s public spaces is important,” Chloe said. She explained that public swimming pools are vulnerable spots for many—especially those who are LGBTQIA+. This event says, “You are safe here, you are amongst people who care.”

Attendees at the 2022 party said the event was a welcoming and affirming experience. For many, it was their first visit to a public pool. “They left asking where the other pools were,” Chloe said.

The event also creates opportunities for peer support and allyship. “I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I would have loved to have this type of opportunity growing up. Now, I’m proud to be able to offer this experience to connect others in the community.”
