Some positions have the residency requirements waived.

Civil service requirements

You must meet the minimum requirements for a job to take a civil service exam. In some cases, the Office of Human Resources (OHR) may accept substitutions for the required education and experience.

OHR will review your application and notify you if you are approved to take the exam.

Getting hired

If you pass the exam, you’ll be placed on the eligible list for hire. You’ll remain on the eligible list for two years.

On this list, applicants are ranked by their exam score. Veterans get points added to their exam score and receive preference in hiring.

If you are selected to interview, you must prove:

  • Your identity.
  • Your right to work in the United States.
  • Your ability to meet the requirements in the exam announcement, such as having a trade license.
