Shawn Hawes grew up in the Wynnefield section of West Philadelphia. In her career, she has worked for Independence Blue Cross, Mecca Marketing Media and for the past 10 years, SEPTA. 
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Philadelphia University where she focused on Emergency Management and Human Resources, she became the Public Information Officer for the Philadelphia Prison System.
