Incoming and outgoing correspondence of William E. Meehan, the first Aquarium superintendent. Topics of the correspondence include the establishment of the Aquarium, funding, acquisition of specimens, information concerning similar institutions, changes in fish laws, and aquarium conditions. Also included are inventories of property, some blueprints of plant and equipment, and copies of lectures given at Aquarium. This record series is not complete.

Entries list appropriation for the year 1911 for maintenance and supplies and daily entries of expenditures including vendor's name, item supplied, cost, monthly totals, and yearly total balanced against appropriation. Entries for 1912 list appropriations for maintenance and supplies, salaries, construction of the Sea Water House, gasoline engines and pumps, tanks and the Seal Pool, partition walls, supply pipes and skylight. Maintenance and supply entries 1912-1927 are similar to those for 1911. Accounts for salaries list month of payment, payee's name, amount paid, monthly totals, and yearly total balanced against appropriation. Entries after 1912 only include entries for supplies and maintenance. Also included for the years 1911-1913 is an inventory of equipment and exhibits purchased listing item purchased, unit cost, total cost, and life expectancy.

Entries grouped alphabetically. Listed are the common name of specimen; its scientific name; how, when and where caught date received at Aquarium; condition on arrival (e.g. alive, dead etc.); size or weight; and by whom reported. Also listed are the following information for other aquariums: number of tanks and pools on exhibition, their capacity; number of tanks in reserve; name of presiding officer of institution; number of gallons of salt and fresh water in tanks; number of reservoirs, their capacity, shape; dimensions of building, its cost; linear feet of glass in permanent tanks; number of exhibits; number of fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, and birds; days and hours open; amount of entrance fee; number of visitors per day, average per year; number of employees; ownership and administration; and when opened.

Entries for day and for night engineer. Each report lists date, shift, signature of engineer signing report, the quantity of coal consumed at each hour of the shift, water temperature at each hour, and remarks (e.g. work performed by men on duty, height of sea water).

Also includes several rough architect's sketches for location of new aquarium, seal harbor and relationship between new aquarium and existing Fairmount Water Works buildings. 1 undated, untitled sketch shows another proposal for a new aquarium under the existing Fairmount Water Works.
