DUTIES

This is construction code enforcement work at the trainee level for the City’s licensing and inspections agency. Employees in this class are responsible for learning to perform field inspections in a program designed to effect compliance with construction codes and ordinances. Work includes working with or accompanying higher level inspectors to review and interpret approved plans, specifications and diagrams and to review all aspects of construction projects for conformance to related codes, ordinances and permits. Contact with contractors, homeowners, construction managers, architects, engineers, landlords, governmental officials and the general public is significant to the work. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. EDUCATION:
    Completion of a two-year program at a technical school or institute with major course work in Building Construction Technology or a related field.

    AND

  2. Two years of full-time paid experience in one of the recognized building trades

    OR

  3. Any equivalent combination of experience and education that has been determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Certification by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Labor and Industry, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code within eighteen months of appointment to the class of L&I Construction Codes Specialist Trainee, in the following categories:

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an L & I Construction Codes Specialist Trainee.



PROJECTED EXAMINATION SCHEDULE

Applicants will be evaluated and scored based upon their training and experience credentials. Applicants will not be asked to appear to take a scheduled examination. An eligible list is planned for September 4, 2009.
