What is “Philly at Work—Looking Out for Each Other”?
At some point in our careers, we all encounter moments when we need extra support at work, whether that means navigating the workplace as a person with disabilities, coping with the loss of a loved one, or managing personal challenges that don’t clock out at the end of the day. These experiences are part of being human, yet they are often accompanied by uncertainty, silence, or stigma in professional settings. Just as often, we find ourselves on the other side of the equation. We notice a colleague who seems overwhelmed, withdrawn, or struggling, and we want to help, but we may not know how to approach the situation in a way that feels respectful, appropriate, and effective.
This is exactly why the Philly at Work—Looking Out for Each Other video series was created. The goal is simple: to increase awareness, empathy, and confidence so we can all show up for one another in meaningful, human ways.
By bringing visibility to topics that can feel complicated or sensitive, this series creates space for honest dialogue and shared learning. Through expert guidance, real examples, and practical tools, we hope to help build a workplace where people feel supported, valued, and seen, especially during the moments when it matters most.
What is ODEI?
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) is the City of Philadelphia’s hub for advancing fairness, access, and opportunity across all levels of municipal government. ODEI works to ensure that every City employee, regardless of role, background, or department, can contribute, grow, and thrive in their workplace.
At its core, ODEI helps the City build a workforce that reflects Philadelphia’s culture and fosters an environment where inclusion is part of everyday practice. The office collaborates closely with departments to strengthen policies and practices that support greater access to opportunities by removing barriers for residents and the City’s internal systems and public‑facing services.
ODEI’s work focuses on:
- Creating a diverse and inclusive City workforce by improving recruitment, retention, and advancement opportunities for all.
- Supporting departments in building fair and accessible policies, practices, and programs that improve how services are delivered.
- Expanding equitable procurement and contracting opportunities to broaden who gets to work with the City.
- Partnering with employees, leaders, and community institutions to ensure that equity is at the center of the City’s major initiatives and day‑to‑day operations.
ODEI is the City’s guide and support system for embedding equity into municipal work, so that both employees and residents benefit from a stronger, more inclusive government.
Championing Inclusion in the Workplace
In our conversation with Brenna Schmidt, Employee Engagement Specialist in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), she highlighted one of the most meaningful ways City employees can support inclusion in their day‑to‑day work: by getting involved in City Resource Groups.
Created in 2019, CRGs are employee-led groups organized around shared identities or allyship—such as race, gender, LGBTQ+ identity, etc. Schmidt described them as a cornerstone of ODEI’s workforce strategy: “I think that the City Resource Groups are one way that that shows where we’re providing opportunities for folks who have historically been marginalized in city government.”
Speaking more broadly about DEI, Schmidt acknowledged how the topic is often portrayed publicly but stressed its real purpose. “I think DEI is something that’s been seen as really polarizing as of late,” she said. “But it’s really simple. DEI supports everybody. It’s a good thing.”
