Parks & Rec Summer Youth Employment Program

Creating an employment pipeline to prepare youth and young adults for public sector careers.

What we do

Each summer Parks & Rec hires youth and young adults to work at our sites. The Philadelphia Youth Network provides Parks & Rec with two types of positions:

  • WorkReady program for youth ages 14-18.
  • State/Local Internship Program (SLIP) for young adults ages 19-24.

The WorkReady and SLIP jobs:  

  • Last eight weeks. 
  • Begin in early July and end in mid-August. 
  • Pay between $8.25 - $10.35 per hour. 
  • Take place at Parks & Rec sites across the city. 

Youth workers assist the department in a variety of ways. They build their communication and leadership skills. Many interact with both younger children and adult staff.

Recruitment and processing for these positions begins in February. To obtain a position, youth ages 14-18 must follow the steps below.

  1. Contact the supervisor at the site where you’d like to work. This person would be:
    • the leader at a recreation or environmental center, or,
    • the director at an older adult center.
  2. If the supervisor agrees to hire you, you’ll be given a website address where you can apply online. You’ll then be given an address to attend enrollment. Make sure to bring the following:
    • PA State ID (driver's license/permit or non-driver ID)
    • Social Security card
    • Work permit or application for work permit
    • Selective Service number or print-out (for any 18-year-old males)
  3. During the enrollment process, you must complete criminal and child abuse background clearances. In some instances, you may be required to complete the FBI fingerprint process.
  4. After you’ve completed the enrollment process we will:
    • notify you if you've been approved for employment and,
    • invite you to attend an orientation session.

You will not be hired if you fail to complete any of the above steps.
