Parks & Rec Summer Youth Employment Program

Creating an employment pipeline to prepare youth and young adults for public sector careers.

What we do

Each summer Parks & Rec hires youth and young adults to work at our sites. The Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN) provides Parks & Rec with WorkReady positions for those 14 to 24 years old.

All Parks & Rec WorkReady staff:

  • Assist at Parks & Rec sites across the city.
  • Build their communication and leadership skills.
  • Interact with both younger children and adult staff.
The Jr. WorkReady Program is for youth 14-18 years old.

Youth employed in this program:

  • Work at recreation centers and playgrounds.
  • Are paid $11.00 per hour.
  • Work 20 hours per week for six weeks (120 hours total).
  • Are employed from Tuesday, July 5 to Friday, August 12, 2022.
The Sr. WorkReady Program is for young adults ages 19-24 years old.

Youth employed in this program:

  • May work at recreation centers, Playstreets, or with special initiatives.
  • Are paid $13.00 per hour.
  • Work 35 hours per week for 8 weeks (280 hours total).
  • Are employed from Tuesday, July 5 to Friday, August 26, 2022.

Process and eligibility

Recruitment and processing for these positions begins in February. To get a position, youth ages 14-18 and young adults ages 19-24 must follow the steps below.

  1. Use this online tool to find a location where you’d like to work. Contact the supervisor. This person would be:
    • the leader at a recreation or environmental center, or,
    • the director at an older adult center.
  2. If the supervisor agrees to hire you, you will receive a link to a website.
  3. Use the link to complete your application online. Be sure to provide the following:
    • PA State ID (driver's license/permit or non-driver ID).
    • Social Security card.
    • Work permit or application for work permit (ages 14-17).
    • Selective Service number or print-out (for any 18-year-old males).
  4. Work with Parks & Rec to complete criminal and child abuse background clearances. You may need to complete an FBI fingerprint process.

After you’ve completed the enrollment process we will:

    • let you know if you've been hired and,
    • invite you to attend an orientation session.

The online application opens on Tuesday, February 15 at www.workready.org.

To begin the application you must first go to a recreation center, secure a position, and receive a code.
