Philadelphia Business Income & Receipts Tax (BIRT) is due July 15, 2020. This is also this year’s deadline to file and pay Net Profits Tax (NPT).

Taxpayers who need more time can get an extension to file BIRT and NPT returns. However, there is no extension for BIRT and NPT payments. You must pay both these Philadelphia business taxes by July 15, 2020.

The best way to pay BIRT and NPT is on www.phila.gov/pay. Paying online is fast, easy and secure. When you use eCheck, it’s also FREE.

Mailing BIRT and NPT returns and payments to us is another option.

  • Returns:
    Philadelphia Dept. of Revenue
    P.O. Box 1660
    Philadelphia, PA 19105-1660
*BIRT and NPT returns can be in the same envelope.
  • Payments:
    Philadelphia Dept. of Revenue
    P.O. Box 1393
    Philadelphia, PA 19105-1393

You should estimate and pay any owed BIRT and NPT by July 15 to avoid possible penalties.

How to get filing extensions

Taxpayers who need extra time to file their federal tax returns may choose to file the appropriate extension form with the IRS.

You must file your IRS extension request no later than July 15. Doing so will give you until October 15 to file a federal return.

Where the IRS grants you extension of time for filing the federal return, the Philadelphia Department of Revenue will automatically grant a matching extension for filing BIRT and NPT.

If you’re granted the federal extension, you don’t need to take any additional action to receive the Philadelphia extension. You do not need to mail us your federal extension request.

The City of Philadelphia honored the IRS’s July 15, 2020 extensions for the BIRT and NPT in response to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

School Income Tax

All 2019 School Income Tax (SIT) returns are also due on July 15.

The deadline to pay SIT was April 15, 2020. SIT returns are now due, as well as any difference between the amount owed and your estimated payment from April.

SIT returns can be filed online or on paper. If you need help, we have a step-by-step video about how to file your SIT return.

SIT paper returns and payments can be mailed to:

  • Philadelphia Dept. of Revenue
    P.O. Box 389
