The New Year is here and resolutions are being made! Community Schools are excellent resources for Philadelphians who want to stick to their goals and lead healthy, happy lives in 2019. In addition to serving 6,500 students each year, Community Schools are often open to the public as well. Here are some of the free wellness resources available to you at Community Schools!

Access healthy food

Food pantry at Alain Locke School 

 

Every Tuesday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m.

Stop by the pop up pantry beginning on January 15. The People’s Emergency Center runs the pantry. Drexel’s Eat Right Philly program will host healthy cooking demonstrations on the last Tuesday of each month.

Monthly affordable farm stand at F.S. Edmonds Elementary School

 

Every 2nd Friday of the month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Stop by the monthly affordable farm stand! This is run by the School District’s Eat Right Philly program and the Share Food Program. The farm stand accepts cash and EBT/SNAP benefits.

NOTE: The next farm stand will take place on January 17. Farm stands return to the 2nd Friday of the month next month on February 8.

Fresh For All at Murrell Dobbins CTE High School

 

Every Wednesday of the month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Come out to Fresh For All, a program operated by Philabundance which offers fresh produce to anyone who stops by, for free. The produce stand is weather-dependent and located in front of the school.

FAWN Food Pantry at William T. Tilden Middle School

 

On Thursdays and Fridays by appointment from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pick up fresh produce and healthy non-perishable food items at the FAWN Food Pantry. The school operates the pantry in partnership with Turning Points for Children. The pantry is open and free to anyone from zip codes 19142, 19143, 19153, and 19104. Call 267-236-1558 to schedule an appointment.

Attend a wellness event

Martin Luther King Jr. Wellness Day at Edward Gideon School

 

On January 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event will include free mental health and wellness resources. Attendees are invited to participate in yoga, art making, trauma conversations, and parent workshops. All are welcome to attend.

Get Fit Saturdays at Murrell Dobbins CTE High School

 

Every Saturday of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

School on a Saturday? Trust us, you’ll love the classes at Get Fit Saturdays! Take a free tai chi class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Prince Campbell, Dobbins’ school nurse, teaches the class. Take a yoga class from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. taught by Root2Rise. Children can partake in a youth basketball program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. hosted by Check It Up.

 

Community Health Fair at Samuel Gompers School

 

On January 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

 

Attend Samuel Gompers School’s first annual Community Health Fair! There will be resources for mental health and physical fitness. Dental care resources, diabetes and heart health screenings, among other offerings.
