Philadelphia Public Service Fellowship

Approach, values, and vision

Learn about the Philadelphia Public Service Fellowship’s approach, values, and vision.

Each Philly Fellows project has a specific long-term goal, and each fellow has a distinct set of milestones and activities unique to their project year.

A common thread across all projects is a focus on capacity building and fair and sustainable solutions for economic mobility. Capacity building activities can include, but are not limited to:

  • Create tools, systems, and guides, such as databases, policy briefs, and marketing materials.
  • Build resources through partnerships, volunteers, or grant-writing.
  • Develop, organize, and assess programs, events, and meetings.
  • Support, establish, or strengthen cross-departmental and cross-sector partnerships.
  • Design and incorporate feedback and evaluation tools based on data and research.

Approach

Projects will fall into these focus areas:

  • Data & Systems for Equity
    • The City of Philadelphia makes data- and value-driven decisions that ensure government accountability. Data & Systems for Equity projects combine strategies and systems during data collection and analysis. Our processes maintain fairness and inclusion by incorporating equitable engagement practices. Projects aim to remove systemic barriers and foster growth for all.
  • Education Access & Career Readiness
    • Education Access & Career Readiness projects build sustainable, accessible pathways to family-sustaining careers. Projects enhance access to services and resources that contribute to improved educational outcomes.
  • Healthy Communities
    • Healthy Communities projects increase access to stable housing, food security, public services and benefits, and people-centered and safe built environments. Projects address ways to improve social and physical determinants of health.

Values

Our staff and program are guided by our five core values:

  1. People-informed: We collaborate with partners to foster innovation, make data-driven decisions, and center equitable practices that effect positive change in Philadelphia.
  2. Inclusion: We cultivate an environment that centers opportunities to celebrate our lived experiences and creates an authentic sense of belonging.
  3. Service: We inspire ourselves and others to embody values and actions rooted in equity and the pursuit of justice.
  4. Resilience: We empower fellows to develop skills and confidence to adapt to challenges and self-advocate.
  5. Leadership: We equip fellows to find their purpose so that they may lead with curiosity, empathy, and intention.

Vision

A Philadelphia where economic opportunity is made possible by a new generation of public servants.
