Division of Environmental Justice

Advancing environmental justice through education, data access, and community resourcing.

What we do

The Office of Sustainability's Environmental Justice Division promotes environmental justice citywide. We envision an environmentally just city where every resident can thrive in a healthy, safe, and prosperous community.

We define environmental justice (EJ) as:

  • Equitable distribution of environmental benefits and burdens.
  • Righting of past harmful environmental policies and practices.
  • Meaningful involvement of residents in decision-making, particularly for those most impacted.

We work to:

  • Educate. We increase understanding of EJ issues and the resources and solutions to address them.
  • Improve access to data. We collect, analyze, and share environmental and health data. We provide data tools to support equitable decision-making and policy.
  • Resource community organizations. We provide grants, consultant support, and networking opportunities.

Our key initiatives include the Philadelphia EJ Mapping Tool and the Community Resilience & Environmental Justice Fund.
