Philadelphia has once again been recognized on the global stage as a 2026 World Festival & Event City by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA). Honored to receive this recognition since 2014, Philadelphia remains committed to helping festivals and events thrive and supporting an industry that contributes to a healthy economy and vibrant communities.
The award was announced on October 5, 2026, during the IFEA Annual Convention & Expo, presented by atVenu in Tucson, Arizona. Philadelphia joins six other communities recognized this year:
- Port St. Lucie, Florida, United States
- Historic Kailua Village, Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, United States
- McAllen, Texas, United States
- Muju-Gun, Jeonbuk State, South Korea
- Pattaya City, Chonburi, Thailand
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Recognition of Collaboration and Community
The award recognizes the work that makes successful events possible—from infrastructure and government services to business partnerships and community involvement. An international panel of industry experts evaluated submissions based on each community’s event offerings, public and private support, marketing efforts, and additional resources for event professionals.
For Philadelphia, that work brings together City departments, event producers, neighborhood organizations, cultural institutions, and local businesses. Their collaboration supports a calendar that includes both major international gatherings and neighborhood traditions, each contributing to the city’s identity and offering opportunities for residents to participate.
An Extraordinary Year for Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s 2026 event season demonstrated the scale and reach of those partnerships. The city’s six FIFA World Cup matches drew nearly 410,000 attendees, while the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill welcomed more than 575,000 attendees over 39 days. The festival combined live match broadcasts with music, food, and cultural programming, giving residents and visitors a free gathering place throughout the tournament.
Alongside the World Cup, Wawa Welcome America, America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, and MLB All-Star Week brought an extraordinary concentration of activity to Philadelphia. These overlapping events required extensive coordination across public safety, transportation, sanitation, and event operations.
The Office of the City Representative and Special Events helped coordinate this work across City agencies and external partners while continuing to support events throughout Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. The office also advanced efforts to modernize special-event permitting and make the planning process more accessible for organizers.
Looking ahead, Philadelphia will build on the relationships, operational experience, and community feedback gained in 2026 to support future events. This year’s recognition celebrates both an exceptional season and the ongoing work to ensure that Philadelphia’s event industry delivers lasting value for the people who live and work here.
