Philadelphia’s newest Liberty Bell replica has officially been revealed! It was designed to honor the people who keep this city running every day, the City’s workforce of over 29,000.

On May 14, the City of Philadelphia unveiled the Workforce Bell at Thomas Paine Plaza as part of the statewide Pennsylvania State Office of Tourism “Bells Across PA” initiative and Philadelphia’s ongoing Philly 250 celebration for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Across Philadelphia, 27 artist-designed Liberty Bell replicas have been installed in neighborhoods and public spaces. Created in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, each bell reflects a unique story about the people, culture, and communities that make Philadelphia special.

The “Workforce Bell”, located outside the Municipal Services Building in the newly renovated Thomas Paine Plaza, was designed by local artist Akira Gordon to celebrate Philadelphia’s municipal workforce. The design features faces, silhouettes, vibrant colors, and a rising sun motif that symbolize unity, strength, hope, and service.

Before the unveiling, the bell was hidden from public view as part of a City employee engagement campaign asking one question: “What’s in the Box?!” Employees from across City government submitted creative guesses and helped build excitement leading up to the big reveal.

During the ceremony, City leaders recognized the thousands of public employees who deliver essential services every day — from maintaining streets and parks to supporting neighborhoods, managing operations, and serving residents across Philadelphia. The Workforce Bell is a tribute to the people that make Philadelphia work!

Residents visiting Center City are encouraged to stop by Thomas Paine Plaza to see the Workforce Bell and explore the citywide Bells Across PA installations celebrating Philadelphia’s communities, creativity, and civic pride.
