Each May, we celebrate National Bike Month – a nationwide event that promotes cycling and draws attention to the benefits using a bicycle for both recreation and transportation. During May, the City organizes and participates in many events while also continuing to move forward key multimodal infrastructure projects.

Recent Events

Some key events this year included:

  • MLK Drive Seasonal Weekend Closure for Recreation – While the season officially began on the last weekend of March, we see an uptick in ridership as the months get warmer and the days get longer. There are even several extended holiday weekend closures including the recent Memorial Day holiday.
  • Indego’s 10th Birthday – As a precursor to Bike Month, the City, Bicycle Transit Systems, and Independence Blue Cross celebrated a decade of the City’s bike share program on April 23. Indego offered its Bike Month Promo pass, which enabled riders to purchase a one-month pass for just $5. The program has pedaled Philadelphia toward a greener, healthier, and more connected city with more than 8 million rides over 10 years.
  • National Bike to School Day – On May 7, Safe Routes Philly and Vision Zero Philadelphia joined the School District of Philadelphia and approximately 200 students at 10 schools across multiple neighborhoods for National Bike & Roll to School Day. The students were accompanied by family members, caregivers, school officials, and community leaders in an event spotlighting the benefits of active transportation.
  • National Bike to Work & Wherever Day – On May 15, the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) joined the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP), elected officials, partners, and cyclists for a press conference at Dilworth Plaza.
  • 21st Philadelphia Ride of Silence – On May 22, OTIS officials joined more than 200 cyclists at City Hall to remember those who lost their lives while cycling in our region. Participants silently rode together in solidarity for about seven miles ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
  • Graduation on Wheels – On May 30, Safe Routes Philly and the Mayor’s Office of Education joined Philly Bike Ride and students at Logan Elementary for the inaugural Graduation on Wheels event, a new initiative designed to advance Philly Bike Ride’s mission of making cycling more fun, safer, and inclusive for everyone. There were 169 students in grades 2 through 5 who received their very own bike, helmet, and lock. They even had the chance to try out their new wheels in the schoolyard with Dr. Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia.

We would like to thank all participants, organizers, and partners in making May 2025 a busy and successful Bike Month!
