PHILADELPHIA – A new trail may be coming to Northeast Philadelphia and the City wants your input.

The potential new trail would connect Glen Foerd with the Poquessing Creek trail at Junod Playground. The 4.3 mile trail would provide new options for walking, biking, exercising, commuting and more. It would connect the existing Poquessing Creek trail with the Delaware River and the East Coast Greenway.

As it studies the feasibility of the trail the City wants input from the public. Where should there be access? What destinations should it reach? What barriers are there?

The public can provide input in two ways.

The City will hold a virtual public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6:00-7:30 pm. Participants will view a presentation, engage with other community members, consider barriers and ways around them, and provide input to help plan the trail.

A second public meeting will consider the draft project report. That meeting will be scheduled in Spring 2022.

The public can also take an online survey and add comments to a trail map.

“Trails connect people to nature, to destinations, and to each other,” said Eleanor Sharpe, executive director of the City Planning Commission. “We want people to tell us what they’d like to see in a trail along Poquessing Creek.” The Planning Commission is leading the study.

The project website includes information about the study. It also has links to the virtual meeting and the online survey and map.

Members of the public without internet access may take part in the meeting by phone. The phone number is 646-876-9923. The meeting ID is 848 7641 6293 and the Passcode is 072104.

The City will produce a feasibility report after hearing from the public and technical experts. The report will identify a preferred alignment, trail types, a maintenance plan, and possible funding mechanisms. It will also build on previous environmental analyses and make recommendations for ecological restoration and stream bank stabilization.

The City expects to release the final report in Summer, 2022.
