January is a time to make resolutions and start the year off right.  And what better way to start off 2020 than by preparing for emergencies?

Many different emergencies can happen in Philadelphia, including:

  • Weather emergencies (extreme heat and floods).
  • Power outages.
  • Chemical spills.
  • Bioterrorism.

It may seem like a large task, but you can prepare yourself and P.A.C.K. for these events with a few simple steps:

Plan Ahead

  • When an emergency happens, you should have a plan in place for you and your loved ones so everyone stays safe and healthy.
  • Write out your plan. Having a written plan makes sure other people know your plan.
  • Need some help? We’ve got you covered! Learn how to make an emergency plan.

Assemble

  • Practice your plan by assembling at an agreed-upon meeting place.
  • Practice makes perfect.  Practice will help everyone remember the plan.

Communicate

  • Talk to your family and friends about your emergency plans.
  • Sign up for ReadyPhiladelphia .
  • Write down important phone numbers in case your cell phone dies.
  • Remember to text, not call, if an emergency happens.

Make Kits

  • There are two types of kits that you can make to stay prepared:
    1. Shelter-In-Place Kit: This kit should contain whatever you and your household need to stay inside for three days.
      1. One gallon of drinking water for each person for each day. Your pet need a gallon of water, too!
      2. Ready-to-eat or canned foods that won’t go bad quickly. Don’t forget a can opener.
      3. Need help getting started? Learn more.
    2. Go Bag: This kit contains basic supplies to keep you and your family healthy, safe, and financially protected when you need to leave your home quickly.
      1. Make sure your supplies fit your family. Prepare for kids, pets, and any special medical needs. (e.g., a spare pair of glasses, back-up prescription medications, diapers and formula)
      2. Need help getting started? Learn more.
  • Both kits should include first aid items. Make sure they aren’t expired.

Preparedness doesn’t stop with you.  Take some time this year to help your friends and family get prepared.
