Philly’s parks and playgrounds celebrate the start of autumn with plenty of events each weekend. Whether you want to stay in your neighborhood or visit a new part of town, there’s something to do all over the city! Experience, arts, culture, and exercise all September long. Here’s a sampling of what’s on tap each remaining weekend in September:
Saturday, September 14
Boxers’ Trail 5k Walk/Run
Time: Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., race begins at 9:30 a.m.
Where: Mander Playground (2140 N. 33rd St., 19121)
Run or walk the scenic cliff paths of the Boxers’ Trail in East Fairmount Park, following the footsteps of famous boxers like Joe Frazier. Registration is free for residents of the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.
Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers at Mifflin Square Park
Time: 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Where: Mifflin Square (500 Wolf Street, 19148)
This site-specific work is inspired by Kun-Yang Lin’s recent Spring 101 piece. This free performance will move throughout the park. Watch or dance along!
Sunday, September 15
Parks on Tap at Penn Treaty Park
Time: 12-10 p.m.
Where: Penn Treaty Park (Columbia Ave. & Beach St., 19125)
This week’s Parks on Tap location is at the beautiful Penn Treaty Park. Parks on Tap brings a beer garden to different parks throughout the city all summer long. Enjoy fresh food, beers on tap, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages in a festive outdoor environment. Comfortable chairs, hammocks, and clean restrooms are provided.
Saturday, September 21
CiderFest at the Historic Houses of Fairmount Park
Time: 12-5 p.m.
Where: East and West Fairmount Park (assorted locations)
Spend a sparkling autumn afternoon on the grounds of six historic houses in Fairmount Park sipping on cider samples from some of the best cideries Pennsylvania has to offer. Enjoy live music, pay as you go food trucks, food samples, and activities to complement your tastings. Hosted by Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Charms of Fairmount Park.
Celebrate Coltrane!
Time: 12-10 p.m.
Where: East Fairmount Park (33 & Oxford Streets, 19121)
Celebrate one of America’s greatest artists, and a neighbor to many Philadelphians, at this free, 10-hour series of performances. Enjoy a film screening and other goodies. Presented by the Philadelphia Jazz Project and its partners.
’80s Night in Port Richmond
Time: 6-9 p.m.
Where: Powers Park (2987 Almond St., 19134)
Celebrate the sounds of the 1980s at this free outdoor concert starring the Class of ’84 and sponsored by Powers Park Conservancy.
Sunday, September 22
Yoga on the Manayunk Bridge
Time: 10-11 a.m.
Where: Manayunk Bridge (100 Dupont St., 19127)
Enjoy outdoor yoga—and one of the best views in Philadelphia—every Sunday in September. Roots2Rise Yoga offers regular community yoga classes at parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers across the city. All levels and ages are welcome to participate, and donations are encouraged.
Saturday, September 28
Fall Festival and Arts & Crafts Festival
Time: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Pennypack Environmental Center (8600 Verree Rd., 19115)
Enjoy an afternoon of seasonal games, pumpkin painting, apple cidering, crafts, and more at the Pennypack Environmental Center. This year the center is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Admission is free. Food and pumpkins will be available for sale.
In Motion, In Place: Trisha Brown Dance Company
Time: Assorted
Where: Mount Pleasant Mansion, The Discovery Center
From September 24-29, this series of free outdoor performances will take place in various locations in Fairmount Park and along the rooftops of Logan Square, extending an invitation to experience Fairmount Park in an entirely new way. Reserve your free tickets to each performance.
Blackwell Championship Showcase Championship Fights
Time: 1-4 p.m.
Where: Athletic Recreation Center (1400 N. 26th St., 19121)
Bring your heart and hard work to the 2019 Blackwell Championship Showcase championship fight. This is where the Philadelphia Greats started- at the Lucien Blackwell Tournament.
Sunday, September 29
Full Body Workout
Time: 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Where: Glen Foerd on the Delaware (5001 Grant Ave., 19114)
Join instructor Carolyn Breyer for a weekly sweat session at Glen Foerd. This hour-long, full-body workout is open to all levels and ages. Class meets at the boat house behind the mansion. After enjoying a great workout, feel free to explore the 21-acre estate and mansion along the banks of the Delaware River.
