As Fairmount Park offers a varied habitat, you'll see a range of migrant, resident and nesting species.
In spring and fall, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of migrants such as the Bobolink, Scarlet Tanager, Gray-cheeked Thrush or Blackburnian Warbler. Spring migrants travel in bunches, whereas fall migrants tend to be more spread out.
Winter visitors like the Pine Ciskin are rare, but have been spotted in both Pennypack and Wissahickon Creek Parks.
Some nesting species can be seen year-round, particularly crows, blue jays, starlings, house finches and house sparrows.
Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or are considering taking up the sport, Fairmount Park has quite a selection of birds. To make things easy, the Friends of the Wissahickon and the Pennypack Environmental Center have each compiled a checklist of the birds in their respective areas.
Some nesting species can be seen year-round, particularly crows, blue jays, starlings, house finches and house sparrows.

The recipe is simple: 1. Take one river (Schuylkill) 2. Add a beautiful setting (Fairmount Park) and a fantastic city (Philadelphia) 3. Include a handful of boathouses4. Mix in a whole lot of enthusiasm and interest
Result:A great venue for rowing. From a single rower on a peaceful river in the early morn to an exciting regatta with lots of noise, colors and fan fare -- rowers of all ages and skill levels flock to the Schuylkill River to practice, compete, learn and last, but not least, enjoy the sport of rowing. Much of the park's rowing activity centers around Boathouse Row, which is near the Philadelphia Museum of Art and sandwiched between Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River. Along Boathouse Row, you'll find twelve structures. The first is Philadelphia Parks & Recreation's rec center, Lloyd Hall, at #1 Boathouse Row. Rowing clubs claim the next ten buildings. Each club is a member of the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, the oldest amateur athletic governing body in America. The Sedgely Club, a private social club, rounds out the Row. Further down the River, you'll find the East Park Canoe Club and the Philadelphia Canoe Club. Throughout the year, some of the clubs located along Boathouse Row hold programs for rowers of every skill level. Fairmount Park too hosts a summer rowing camp for young adults.
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation works with various partner organizations to provide rugby programming across the city.

There are four permanent skateboarding parks in Philadelphia overseen by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. PPR hosts some skateboarding events like the Philly Cup Skateboard Series. The Philly Cup Skateboard Series is a new Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) event in partnership with the Franklin’s Paine Skatepark Fund. This inaugural event consists of four competitions at various PPR sites throughout the city. Participants competed in age groups and earn points at each event, based on how they finish. The more events they enter, the better their chances of winning the title. After the final competition of the year, the top point earner in each age group will be presented with the “Philly Cup”. Competition is open to all ages from 7 to 70. Our skate parks are located at: - Carmella Playground 2100 Wakeling Street, Philadelphia, PA 19124
- Pop’s Playground: 2150 East Huntingdon Street, Philadelphia, PA
- McCreesh Playground: 6744 Regent Street Philadelphia, PA 19142
- FDR Park: 1954 Pattison Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19145
- Granahan (semi-permanent): 6500 Callowhill Street Philadelphia, PA 19151
- Paine’s Park: 24th & The Parkway (to open Summer 2013)
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation organizes many races and multi-sport events every year. The biggest of which is the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, which occurs the first Sunday in May. PPR also organizes youth-based races and multi-sport events. The Department partners with TriYouthalon to conduct Triathlons (swim/bike/run) and Duathlons (run/bike/run) in various sections of Fairmount Park. The events are open to youth 7-16 years old and offer age appropriate distances. Youth compete in age groups and can select the triathlon or duathlon events. These events provide a way for children to participate in physically active competition and visit several local park systems. For more details on the multi-sport events, visit www.triyouthalon.org.
