Preventing Intergroup Conflict

While most people celebrate the City’s wonderful diversity, at times individuals and communities experience conflict motivated by prejudice or hate based on their race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, sex (gender), disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. To resolve these conflicts the PCHR staff works closely with local police districts, schools, community groups, City departments and other entities, to remain informed about community problems and to work cooperatively in the alleviation of tensions when they arise. PCHR staff also helps to establish long-term peace and harmony by empowering communities to work together to solve common problems.

The PCHR also provides schools, communities and government agencies with informational sessions on issues relating to intergroup harmony and conflict resolution. These educational activities are designed to reduce and prevent tension incidents from escalating into negative behavior or violence.
