The Department of Human Services (DHS) Education Support Center (ESC) consistently works to improve education stability, continuity, and well-being of children and youth involved with DHS. ESC comprises of two sections – Education Stability Services (ESS) and Truancy Intervention and Prevention Services (TIPS).

Education Stability Services (ESS):
We work with the local education agencies to prevent disruptions to DHS involved children and youth education. We also collaborate with partners to identify and remove educational barriers for children involved with DHS.
Our Education Stability Services representatives, known as ESS liaisons, work with DHS case management team and other partners to address education-related problems a student involved with DHS may be having, including:

  • School enrollment
  • Attendance barriers and truancy.
  • Transportation.
  • Support for students with special education needs.
  • Concrete needs such as uniform, school supplies, tuition assistance.

How we help children and youth

The Education Stability Services (ESS) provides resources, referrals, and linkages to services to enhance educational stability and support the educational needs of children and youth involved with DHS from kindergarten to college.

The priorities of ESS are to:

  • Maintain the education stability of children and youth involved with DHS.
  • Coordinate and facilitate Best Interest Determination (BID) Conference
  • Work with local education agencies and other partners to prevent another disruption to DHS involved children and youth education.
  • Support with school attendance and truancy through community-based agencies, helping to strengthen families' capacity to get students to school consistently.
