Mayor Michael Nutter held a press conference today at City Hall to discuss how street closures would affect residents and visitors when Pope Francis visits the city in late September.

The city will put in place a “traffic box” which will go into effect beginning Friday, September 25th.

Vehicles will not be allowed to enter the traffic box beginning at that time. Any vehicles inside the traffic box can travel within it. If a car should leave the box it will not be allowed back in until the traffic box is reopened, which has not been decided yet.

Pedestrians and bicycle traffic will be allowed within the box.

There are two separate sections of the traffic box.

The traffic box that will shut down first on Friday, September 25th at 6 p.m. in Center City is bordered by:

  • North: Girard Avenue at the Schuylkill River, eastbound to Ridge Avenue to Spring Garden Street at Delaware Avenue
  • East: Delaware Avenue between Spring Garden Street to South Street
  • South: South Street from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River
  • West: Schuylkill River between South Street and Girard Avenue.

The second shut down Friday September 25th at 10 p.m. is in West Philadelphia. That traffic box is bordered by:

  • North: Powelton Avenue eastbound, above 30th Street Station to 32nd
  • East: Schuylkill River from above 30th Street Station southbound to University Avenue
  • South: University Avenue to the Schuylkill River.
  • West: University Avenue between the Schuylkill River northbound to Powelton Avenue

Mayor Michael Nutter indicated that the city will release more details as they become available.
