The City of Philadelphia recently created a new community oversight board that will handle problems within the Philadelphia Prison system. Here’s what this board does, and how you can get involved by attending PCOB’s public meetings.
What is the Philadelphia Prison Community Oversight Board?
In May 2025, Philadelphia City Council passed a bill to create a new oversight body called the Philadelphia Prison Community Oversight Board, or PCOB for short. PCOB is a board made up of nine members that are chosen by City leadership that represent folks who are directly impacted by the prison system. These members come from all walks of life and are chosen based on lived experience and expertise.
What does PCOB do?
PCOB holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. The board reviews prison conditions, oversees investigations, and promotes transparency inside Philadelphia’s correctional facilities. PCOB also gives recommendations on policies and practices that best serve this community. PCOB will work closely with the Office of Prison Oversight once it is created.
How can I get involved?
During PCOB’s monthly public meetings, you can listen to board updates, ask questions about what the board is up to, and make public comments. The next public meeting is scheduled for September 23, 2026, and will be held virtually here. Here’s what you can expect at this meeting:
