Traffic safety improvements to seven additional intersections, following eleven Chestnut Street locations where pedestrian refuge islands were constructed last year
PHILADELPHIA – The Streets Department of Transportation announces the ongoing construction of pedestrian refuge islands at seven intersections along Chestnut Street in West Philly. These locations are in addition to the eleven intersections where islands were constructed last year.
The new pedestrian refuge islands upgrade the existing painted buffers and flex posts with an improved and more durable concrete design. They provide clear instructions and better visibility to everyone traveling at these intersections, whether they are walking, biking, or driving. These improvements deliver on Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s vision for a safer Philadelphia for all.

Construction is managed by StreetsDOT and completed by Road-Con, Inc. Temporary partial road closures will occur during active construction. This project is anticipated to be completed later this summer. This work is weather dependent, and the schedule may change.
